Il borgo e la Torre
All’orizzonte di Pavullo, verso oriente, su uno dei colli che circondano la città, si scorge il borgo tardo-romanico di Lavacchio, all’interno della frazione di Niviano. Feudo inizialmente appartenente alla Famiglia Rastaldi e successivamente a quella dei Montegarullo, fortificato a più riprese, diventa una delle maggiori roccaforti del territorio. Secondo le memorie raccolte nel XIX secolo da Don Francesco Santi, eremita di Sassomassiccio, Lavacchio si presentava come un piccolo borgo di case costruite attorno alla Torre, circondato da mura. Divenuta uno dei simboli del luogo, la Torre di vedetta è stata oggetto di un attento restauro che le ha ridonato il pregio andato perduto. Di tipologia medievale presenta una struttura possente e conserva elementi caratteristici del corpo originario, come testimoniano il portale sopraelevato e due mensole per la caditoia.
La chiesa
Sul vicino colle si erge la chiesetta dedicata a Sant’Anna. Consacrata il 6 agosto del 1552, presenta un’originale facciata con il campanile a vela al centro, a due campane, secondo una rara tipologia riconducibile alla chiesa di San Lorenzo a Montecuccolo. Caratteristica la “bifora a cielo aperto”, per dar luce all’interno attraverso il piccolo rosone. Entrando attraverso l’antico portone, è possibile ammirare due dipinti posti sull’altare e sulla parete sinistra. Il primo datato 1657 richiama alla memoria Sant’Anna e descrive l’avvenimento della nascita della figlia Maria. Il secondo è un grande dipinto con pregevole cornice realizzata da frate Antonio Muzzarelli eremita a Sassomassiccio, che raffigura alcuni Santi tra i quali: Santa Caterina d’Alessandria, San Michele, San Francesco, San Geminiano, Sant’Orsola, San Girolamo e Sant’Antonio Abate e al centro la Vergine Maria e il bambin Gesù. La Chiesa di Sant’Anna lascia in eredità uno dei più importanti esempi di chiesa rurale del XVII secolo presenti nel territorio.
Il Museo a cielo aperto
Lungo la salita, lieve fino alla piazza, ogni passo ci accompagna alla scoperta delle opere realizzate negli anni ’80, da artisti nazionali ed internazionali, all’esterno delle piccole case del borgo e sul muro che costeggia la strada. Dipinti, mosaici e sculture creano un’atmosfera poetica a tratti fiabesca. Dopo anni di abbandono nel 2020 il Comune di Pavullo ha promosso progettualità culturali per dare visibilità, attraverso contest biennali, ad un maggior numero di artisti, per vivacizzare la cultura e l’arte del territorio, con un particolare coinvolgimento delle giovani generazioni. Nascono così la Biennale d’Arte “Sui muri di Lavacchio” e l’omonima Biennale dedicata alla Poesia. Il muro, le case, il borgo di Lavacchio si mostrano all’occhio dell’osservatore come un Museo a cielo aperto, fatto di immagini, parole e dove differenti linguaggi espressivi rendono omaggio alla bellezza dell’arte e della natura.

The village and its history
The village and the Tower
At the horizon of Pavullo, towards the east, on one of the hills surrounding the city, you can see the late-Romanesque village of Lavacchio, part of the hamlet of Niviano. The feud, initially belonging to the Rastaldi Family and later to that of the Montegarullo, has been fortified several times and became one of the most important strongholds in the area. According to the memories collected during the 19th century by Don Francesco Santi, a hermit in Sassomassiccio, Lavacchio appeared as a small group of houses built around the tower, surrounded by walls. Having become one of the symbols of the area, the watchtower has been the subject of a careful restoration which has restored its lost value. This medieval-type tower shows a mighty structure and preserves characteristic elements of the original building, as evidenced by the raised gate and by the two shelves for the storm drain.
The church
Over the nearby hill stands the small church dedicated to Sant’Anna. Consecrated on 6 August 1552, it has an original façade with a bell tower in the centre and two bells, according to a rare typology already observed in the Church of San Lorenzo, in Montecuccolo. Characteristic is the open-air double-arched windows used to bring light inside the church through the small rose window. Entering through the ancient gate, it is possible to admire two paintings placed above the altar and on the left wall. The first one, dated 1657, recalls Sant’Anna and describes the birth of her daughter Maria. The second one is a large painting with an exquisite frame built by the monk Antonio Muzzarelli, hermit in Sassomassiccio, which represents some saints, among which: Santa Caterina d’Alessandria, San Michele, San Francesco, San Geminiano, Sant’Orsola, San Girolamo e Sant’Antonio Abate and, in the middle, the Virgin Mary and Jesus. The Church of Sant’Anna represents one of the most important examples of a 17th century rural church in the area
The open-air museum
Along the slight climb up to the square, each step takes us to discover the works of art created in the 1980s by national and international artists, outside the small houses of the village, and on the wall run along the road. Paintings, mosaics, and sculptures create a poetic and sometimes fairy-tale atmosphere. After years of abandonment, in 2020 the municipality of Pavullo promoted cultural projects to give visibility, through biennial artistic contests, to a greater number of artists, to liven up the culture and the art of the area, with a particular involvement of the young generations. This is how the art biennale “Sui muri di Lavacchio” and the homonymous biennale contest dedicated to poetry were born. The wall, the houses, the village of Lavacchio appear to the observer’s eye as an open-air museum, made of images, words and where different expressive languages pay homage to the beauty of art and nature.
